- 1). Calculate the optimum level for the field. Starting with a relatively level field makes this process easier. You need to find a medium level so you may remove soil from higher points to fill in low spots. In optimum situations, you want to accomplish this with little or no soil leftover.
- 2). Set the laser transmitter to the proper level. The laser transmitter sends out a beam of light parallel to the planed level of the field.
- 3). Mount the laser receiver on the scraper. Scrapers are earthmoving machines that pick up a thin layer of dirt from the top of the ground and move it into a storage area of the machine. The laser receiver will indicate whether to lower or raise the blade of the scraper to remove the proper amount of soil to achieve the intended level.
- 4). Scrape the entire field with the laser controlled scraper unit. Add soil to low spots as indicated by the laser receiver and remove dirt from the high areas. Continue doing this until, no matter where you drive, the laser receiver indicates the land is at the right height.
- 5). Add ridges or borders around the perimeter the field to keep irrigation water from running off the field. This is more necessary with flood or surface irrigation systems than irrigation systems that spray water from above the plants.
